How Much One Gets Paid in Legal Referrals
Lawyer Referral fees are strictly regulated by The Florida Bar (Rules 4-1.5(g)). In 2026, if you refer a friend to a lawyer, you might get a maximum of 25% of the lawyer’s fee. The exact amount depends on the case’s complexity and the referring source’s contribution.
Our team member at People for Law will determine the value of your referral, and you will receive that amount. You will receive 25% of the lawyer’s fee, either by money transfer or through other legally approved modes.
Taxable Income Rules for Legal Referral Fees
Legal referral fees are generally taxable income and must be reported to the IRS. If your total payment is more than $600 in the calendar year of 2026, you are required to send a Form 1099-NEC (Nonemployee Compensation).
Your referral income is generally treated as self-employment income and is subject to the Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare). From 2026, we will pay referral fees on leads related to mass torts and personal injury cases received in the state of Florida, as well as from other U.S. States.
